Mergers and acquisitions are often a promising path to rapid growth, but very often they turn out less successful than hoped. An M&A strategy needs to be well thought out, and potential partners or targets need to be carefully examined for strategic and cultural fit. As with a good marriage, strategic issues need to be clarified in advance and critical points clarified before committing (forever). And after the marriage, the so-called post-merger integration must be carefully implemented so that all parties involved settle into their new roles and the hoped-for synergies materialize.
